70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and India

In the year 2017, Russia and India are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During the year, the two countries are scheduled to hold a series of joint activities.

Russian-Indian relations comprise a long history, including the period when India was a British colony. But in 1947 when Indians got independence from Great Britain, the Government started to establish formal contacts and diplomatic relations. During Cold War the USSR and India maintained economic and military relations. Therefore, 2017 is a celebration of 70 years of Indian independence, and also 70 years of diplomatic relations with the different countries of the world, including Russia.

Today both countries are connected on several areas of cooperation: trade partnership (India is the second largest market for Russian defense industry; already in 2004, approximately 70% of military equipment in the country was delivered from Russia), political dialogue (on the platforms of embassies and consulates in both countries: embassies in Moscow and New Delhi, the Consulate in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and in Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai), interaction within the framework of international structures, intercultural exchange and many other things.
