The Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Chennai (RCSC) is a Southern Indian branch of the Represуntative Office of the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo) that was created in September 2008 in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 1315 of September 6, 2008.
The main complex of buildings of the RCSC was built in 1972. Further buildings and premises of the Center were repeatedly renovated and reconstructed. Centre covers the territory of 6285 square meters, located in one of the most prestigious regions of the central part of the city – Alwarpet – 10 – minute drive from the main Chennai beach.
History pages of activity of the RCSC in Chennai are filled with many significant events of political and socio-cultural life of both countries. At different times the events organized by the Centre have been marked by the participation and attention of many famous figures and officials, including heads of the government of State Tamil Nadu, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill, pilot-cosmonauts Rakesh Sharma, Valentina Tereshkova, Peter Klimuk, Indian actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, World Chess Champion Visvanatan Anand whose chess career began in chess club at the RCSC in Chennai, etc.
From the very beginning work of the Center was focused on the development of club activities and carrying out events together with representatives of the Indian public and state organizations, strengthening and dissemination of positions of Russian Language in the region. Now at the centre 12 clubs, associations and public organizations, including Indo Russian Cultural and Friendship Society, Indo Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Association of compatriots from Russia and the CIS countries, "Study Abroad" consultants for education in Russia, Russain Visa Centre are functioning.
The Center regularly conducts at its base and on the basis of partner organizations, forums, conferences, seminars and round tables in bilateral humanitarian cooperation; scientific, educational, artistic, books, photos and other themed exhibitions and competitions; film festivals and movie screenings; organizes concert programs, dance and musical performances by Russian and Indian creative teams in Chennai and other cities in South India.
Premises of the Center include: сinema and concert hall for 260 seats, exhibition hall, dance classes, language courses, library.
